This website is intended as an expression
of the love and pride we have for our city. Some of the images which it contains
(for example Aeric Kane's evocative photographs) are subject to copyright
restrictions - please respect the ownership rights of our contributors and
don't use their work without seeking permission.
The historical images you'll find here have
all been filtered, clarified and enhanced with the latest digital imaging
technology. If you have visited the official archives and other Derby-themed
sites, the chances are that you'll remember the most famous pictures as dark,
soiled, indistinct, age-spotted or torn museum pieces. We have done our best
to return these photographs to the way they would have looked when first
created...or to improve them using techniques which weren't available to
photographers before the days of computer-aided graphics. This approach will
inevitably offend purists - but we believe that many more people will share
our desire to clearly see details which have been hidden by the ravages of
time or the limitations of early photographic processes. We aimed to give
faces to our dead ancestors; to lift shadows which obscured buildings and
street signs; to focus on aspects of Victorian and early 20th Century life
which were previously cloaked in the murk of grime and
under-exposure.
As Derby Photos expands and develops,
we want to give our visitors opportunities to share their family photographs
and personal memories. If you have stories to tell, pictures to show or
corrections for our texts, please use the e-mail link below to get in touch
with us. |
